For sound in Unreal, you may want to look for OpenAL, The install on the Unreal2k4 DVD should provide it, but I'm not too familiar with Ubuntu packaging.

Gamepads. I know the Logitech Wingman series has worked, the ones that are shaped like the playstation controllers (or close to them).</description>
