Note To Self 24: Dual-boot To The Head
This comic came out of a conversation I had with TheJoe where I had to admit that I really need to simplify my setup. My main computer is a dual-boot, Ubuntu Studio and Windows. However, the only reason I log into Windows is for a couple of games. (In deference to this article, I haven’t been able to get the Orange Box fully working with Wine.) I’ve been such a gamer for a long time that part of me still clings to Windows with the added excuse that I can run Adobe stuff for work. But this setup really clutters my computer and it’s more hassle than it needs to be, for me and for TheJoe. I’ve been working towards a laptop for a long time, but instead of making it a Linux tablet like we’ve planned, we’re considering making it a Mactop, then making my tower fully Ubuntu Studio. In discussing this, TheJoe convinced me that if ever I needed to run any Windows stuff, I could always use a virtual machine. I do find virtual machines pretty cool. If something goes horribly wrong, it’s just a matter of deleting the sandbox and making a new one, and it doesn’t affect my computer’s data at all. There’s also less wear on a computer from having to reboot into different OS’s more frequently. Plus, I really have many more options available to explore (consoles and native Linux games) to satisfy my gaming urges.
A few thoughts on the cartoon itself:
When I had this idea, I considered using the OS geeks for this, but I didn’t think it was an OS-specific issue. Also, by making the characters more creature then human, the kick to the head is much more cartoonish. It runs along the same lines as South Park getting away with killing Kenny all the time because he is little more than a collection of brightly-colored geometric shapes and a muffled incoherent mumble, and if he was any more realistically designed then the humor might take a back seat to the horrific brutality of the violence. Also, for the first time in the cartoon, I use a more traditional black outline for the characters. It makes sense in my mind that since these characters are much more abstract than any of my others, that they also have the black outlines, where my other characters like people have the no-outline/gradient-color look to them.

Haha! nice cartoon. Simple and to the point
BTW, have you tried using a darker version of the base colour for the outline instead of just the black?

I’ve been able to get my Orange Box running with Cedega.
The unfortunate side effect is that it’s 5 bucks a month, but you get support when something breaks (IE, Valve updates).
I can also run a few other games that I’m normally not able to on linux as well. WoW, Guild Wars, Warcraft 3, and a quite a few others.
Check it out, and I think there’s a trial version available (latest version 6.0.5 fixed a number of OB issues).
