The simple view from 2008

January 8th, 2008

OK, so there’s been some inactivity on the site and I thought I’d post on what’s been up lately.

Well, my friends and I have moved again. Usually I have a bit of anxiety whenever we move, but this one I felt good about. Part of that feeling was due to how cramped and crappy the last place was. Probably one of the more unbelievable incidents was a thief broke into one of our vehicles and stole a radio. In the middle of the day. When one of the girls brought this up to the security guards, they said it was just too hot that day to make any patrols.

The new place is much nicer. TheJoe has some pictures of it on his site. It’s in a better neighborhood; grocery store, videogame stores, and food joints are basically right on our doorstep; and everyone has more room now. We’ve gone through storage and sorted through what we want to keep and toss. And thanks to TheJoe’s mastery of space maximization everything is organized and set up so there’s no “try this over there…no, maybe it looked better back over there” moments.

Other changes happened in the office. Before, we have always had problems with the temperature. Between the computers that two or three people were using, plus the server stuff, whatever room we use for the office always generates excess heat. It’s always been a balance the temperature in that room with the rest of the house. Plus, TheJoe is not a fan of complex jerry rigging. One of the themes of this move was “Simplify, simplify” (along with the unofficial phrase of the move: “It’s not heavy, but it is bulky.”) so aside from the server stuff we’ve all switched to laptops, and it’s made a tremendous difference. We now have no issues with excess heat in the office. Laptops pretty much have caught up with the computing demands of what we do, even my graphics stuff.

The only interim right now is my laptop. It’s a Toshiba Satelliete and as anyone who searches Ubuntu forums and sites knows, Satellites do not like to let Ubuntu play sound. TheJoe had tried many fixes he read about and none of them worked one-hundred percent well (see previous paragraph) so for now … (sigh) … I’m running Vista, with VMWare so I can try out other distros. The Toshiba is an interim laptop anyway, because we all seem to be moving towards Macs. It makes sense for me and my graphics work to move towards OSX since that’s what I work with. Plus I can use VM Fusion for any Linux stuff. As much as I like some of the new stuff with CS3, I still find Inkscape easier to use over Illustrator.

Soooo… there might be a little more delay with the next comic while that stuff gets straightened out. Plus the new versions of Wordpress and ComicPress are out and I want to update the site to those. This week is very hectic, however. CES isĀ  up and running in Vegas and Joe and Angel are putting in some work representing Entropia Universe. Hopefully things will calm down soon.

In the meantime, Hope you all had happy holidays and may you find the clarity of simplicity in the new year!

Hey - I was looking for the old Knights of the Dinner Table animations that used to be here - and I saw a post from last May mentioning that you had to take them down. Any chance you’ll still be putting those up at some point? They were fantastic!
