Note To Self 26: Thankless Job

Being an adult is a thankless job.

When you’re a kid you’re still learning how to do things, and you’re still cute enough that people pay attention to you. When you accomplish something, people smile and go ‘Yay! You did it!’ and hug you.

When you’re an adult, though, these things are expected of you. No one’s out there going ‘Yay! You brushed your teeth all by yourself!’ You’re expected to know how to dress yourself and take care of yourself and do all the chores and upkeep life requires of you. It’s like when LUGRadio had a comparison of various Linux distros and said “Linux doesn’t get points for having the keyboard work correctly anymore.” And yet it seems like some people still need acceptance. Some demand some sort of recognition for little tasks. These are the people whose wives complain that they’re not a wife, but a mother. It’s this mentality that for decades has cast the man asa the bumbling idiot in the family comedy, screwing up yet still being lovable while the wife keeps the house together. It keep people from realizing their full potential as people and instead enslaves them to dependency and flattery.

I admit, I fall into that mental trap myself. I just want to break out of it. I want to be able to get through my tasks without the pressing need for praise. I want to be an adult.

Cute cartoon, Andrew. I like your choice better, also!

Whatever happened to the old Knights of the Dinner Table flash videos from late 90’s-early 2000’s? Those things were classics.

    Andrew,

First: you really need to have a generic contact page so people can write you without posting a comment to a blog entry and hoping you find it.

Second: I FOUND THE KODT ANIMATIONS!! There is a site out there (http://www.archive.org/web/web.php) that stores a cache of webpages as they are updated, it doesn’t work 100%, but I was able to dig through and find the old animations.

I collected all the KODT and DT animations, as well as the teaser/trailer animations he put up and some other miscellaneous content. In addition, there is a little gem of a mashup .mp3 (Strong Bad vs Sugarhill Gang vs Chic) that he made.

It’s about 12 MB all told. If Andrew’s willing, I’d be happy to upload a .zip with all the .swf files to his server so everyone can download them. If not, I’ll see if I can’t find some other way to distribute these files (BitTorrent, etc.). In the meantime, you can always go spelunking through the dusty attic of the intertubes on your own :-)
