December 10, 2003 - 5:30PM - I'm Going To A Con! Part II

RIP Black Isle
Well, I write this shortly after I have had a partial root canal (always fun, plus the promise of more!) and moments before I pack and head to GenCon Anaheim. John and I managed to find a hotel a block away from the convention center for cheap. So if you're going to be there and want to spot me (and if they'll let me take it in with me) I'll be taking my 'Critical Staff' with me. It's a walking stick I had custom-made with a D20 carved in the top of it. Hope to see you there and hope to have some good news to report, since, thanks to the root canal, I was unable to get the next cartoon finished,

December 3, 2003 - 7:00AM - I'm Going To A Con! I'm Going To A Con!
They all seem so far away from here in Vegas. However, now that GenCon has a venue in Southern California and John scored some tickets, I shall be in attendance! All four days. Got the hotel reservations and the drive from Vegas to Anaheim is only four hours so if you wanna chat, be on the lookout for me. If I can put "Hoody Hoo Cartoons" on my badge, I will. Don't know what games I'll take part in yet, but I will be bringing all my Warlord cards.
On an unrelated note, check out Plastic Hammer by A17roolz! It is to Warhammer what my toons are to RPGs. Funny stuff.
Oh, and just so I don't get bombarded with "When's the new toon coming out?", I'm working to get the next toon up before I go to the con.

November 15, 2003 - 11:40AM - X=33+1
Happy Birthday to me...
Happy Birthday to me...
Yes, I plan on getting off my ass soon...
Happy Birthday to me...

September 2, 2003 - 1:30AM - That's Right...
I am now an AWARD-WINNING ANIMATOR! The judging is in and I took THIRD PLACE, baby! According to my contact, that speaks highly of my work since "Best Animation" was more of an all-encompassing category than others. Hoody Hoo, indeed!
Oh yes, the new Dork Tower cartoon is up. Enjoy!
July 5, 2003 - 9:15PM - On a roll!
The lip-sync is going faster than I expected. So I can safely say that the ninth cartoon will be finished and posted sometime on Friday the 11th. Rejoice, fellow Knights!
So how was your 4th?
June 21, 2003 - 8:15PM - Liberation!

The freakin' figures are freakin' DONE, man! All 1700 of them! And it only took me two weeks instead of three! The burden has been lifted, loyal Knights! Cartoon nine moves forward! Hoody Hoo!

May 29, 2003 - 2:00PM - It Ain't My Fault!

As you can see on the progress, I'm very close to getting the next cartoon out. However, an unusual situation has come up, that I have to spend the next THREE WEEKS rectifying.
Games Workshop has seen fit to change their numbering system for all their products. Figures, rulebooks, paint, everything. This is how we enter product into the computer here at the store. Sooooo, I have to spend the next three weeks taking inventory of ALL our Games Workshop product and changing every number on the product AND in the computer.
I will see when I can squeeze in time to get the cartoon finished, and I don't intend to let THREE WHOLE WEEKS pass by without getting the cartoon out (I WANT this cartoon out now!) , but this 'snafu' takes precedence.
If you'd like to express displeasure you can write to or or

Remember, that's GAMES "Oh, I'm sure 'WARMACHINE' is just a phase' WORKSHOP

May 28, 2003 - 11:30AM - Downloads are down
You may notice that I've taken down the downloadable versions of the Knights cartoons. This is not permanent. Jolly requested that I add some notes to my site to let people know that the Knights are registered trademarks of KenzerCo, and asked that I give credit to the writers whose stories I've adapted. So not only are the links down, but I've erased the files from the server too.
I also want to fix a few things on a few cartoons while I update. Don't worry, this won't affect the development of Cartoon Nine, as the changes to the cartoons will be small.
May 19, 2003 - 8:45PM - Nominated!
That's right! I'm bonafide!
Some of you may know that the first series of Knights cartoons is currently showing in the International Festival of Cinema and Technology. They've shown in Paris, and Canada so far. Originally supposed to end up in Los Angeles, I was told that they switched to showing in New York, which they felt would get a better audience and a better time.
But the big news is being informed that I am nominated for Best Animated Short! Hoody Hoo! I don't know the time of the showing yet, and sadly I will not be able to attend now, but I'm curious to know if I'll win.
In other news, I also have to update some small things on the site here and there to show the registered trademark of the Knights. This is going to include the cartoons as well, to show updated information. So if you've downloaded the cartoons, those first versions will end up being collectables.
Work continues on the new cartoon!
May 6, 2003 - 2:00AM - Sometimes we get what we want...
Many times before, I've been trying to figure out how to have more time to work on cartoons and still keep a roof over my head. I'm sure you all would enjoy a more increased release schedule than the one currently in place. This was further contemplated when I kept track of the actual time it took to make the recent Dork Tower cartoon. The voices had all been recorded and edited long ago, but I have a good handle on how long that process takes. It's the actual cartoon itself that I don't have a handle on. So I was surprised that the actual time spent creating that cartoon, including drawing new art and customizing the loading and end screens, totalled nine hours. I'm now beginning to understand how Homestar Runner can put up a new Strong Bad e-mail every week.
Anyway, here's what came up: The guy who works at the game store five days a week has quit, and I've been offered (and have taken) the position. My deal with them now includes having my rent and utilities covered, plus a little extra money each month which should cover most of my non-house bills. The job has me doing a few things like cleaning, and restocking, and processing new material as shipments come in, but for the most part, I can sit here behind this counter and do with my time what I want. John has a very nice laptop connected to the internet, which he very graciously allows me to use. At work, I can work on the cartoons, publish them, and even upload and edit the website. About the only thing I can't do at work is answer e-mails or chat, which is probably a good thing if I want to get stuff done.
In effect, I've gotten what I wanted. More time to work on the cartoons, which I plan to use well. Here's a little something to show some new artwork that's going to make it's way to the new cartoons
:

Yup. That's the Untouchable Trio Plus One in superdeformed format. I had thought about drawing them like this even before I had gotten into playing older console RPGs. I'm pretty sure these guys will show up in more than one of the next cartoons. I'm even contemplating making up a wallpaper of them in the Final Fantasy style (Maybe something like "Penultimate Parable") I'm still trying to come up with something to stand for the chocobo, and it just occured to me that it'll probably end up having B.A.'s face.
I received the first donation I've had in a long while, so since it came on May 1st, I've started listing how much I've gotten so far in donations again. To all those who can't donate and click on a banner, I appreciate it. However, I think I need to find a better paying service. The one I'm on now only pays out when I've reached fifty dollars, and it took six months to get to that sum. There must be something better. I'm working to NOT put pop-ups and pop-unders on this site so you can fully enjoy this site.
In other news, I've done a piece of fan art for the webcomic Something Positive. You can click here to view the piece I did. Although, to appreciate the joke you have to know about Choo-choo, which I recommend, as this comic made me laugh out loud. This humor is very mature, and the character interaction insures they'll never guest on a Disney toon, but underneath all the insults and practical jokes that border on hazing, there's a well developed series of characters that care about each other and defenitely have each others' backs. But Choo-choo still rocks.
April 25, 2003 - 1:30AM - New Cartoon!
Check it out!
April 19, 2003 - 8:30PM - Lavos is dead
...and I finshed him off!
That's right! I finally finished Chrono Trigger! Finished with a party of Crono, Marle and Robo with Crono at level 52 with the Rainbow sword and all the side quests completed. All in all, I'm very impressed with the game and that they could fit all of that story and gaming into an SNES cart.
Oh yeah, and cartoon eight is finally downloadable. Sorry for the delay.
April 11, 2003 - 7:37AM - Next cartoon will be up soon!
Yup, there's some adjustments to still be made, but the next cartoon is all but done! Expect a big surprise on this one!
I'd also like to give a belated shout to , and Bill Enniss of Imperial Outpost Games in Glendale, Arizona. I ran into them at GAMA and found some true fans in them. If you're anywhere near them, check out the store and tell 'em Zelig sent ya!

March 17-20, 2003: GAMA Report

March 20, 2003 - 3:40AM - GAMA: Wednesday
Another big day all around. First up, the shoutouts:
Nick Scott of Arcane Games for Tower Siege. The game has been out for a while, but, hey, they won't retire any cards like certain games...
Chris Davis of RPG Objects. Makers of Darwin's World and the GM Mastery books.
Possibly the hardest working salesman in GAMA, Mike Demetro of Guildhall Press. Makers of Scared Stiff: The B-Movie Horror RPG.
Dan Sivils of GamingReport.com! A most excellent news site of all things gaming! Very cool and worth checking out.
Matthew Spange of Mongoose Publishing, with the new mech game: Armageddon 2089. Very nice 3D color graphics of all the mechs available.

(The extremely cute) Christine Monachos of XIG Games with the most uniquely premised RPG I've seen in a while: Starchildren: Velvet Generation. Basically, our world has been purged of all art and music and become a dull and dreary place. However, aliens have intercepted our old radio signals and discovered the insiprational sounds of rock and roll! Now they have arrived on earth and live among us to bring our music back to liberate us. Sure it sounds like a Styx concept album, but I think the idea is pretty cool. If all you can embrace in RPGs are medieval dragon battles and futuristic mech clashes, then how much of a roleplayer are you? It's getting good reviews, so give it a look-see.
Joseph Goodman of Goodman Games with quite possibly the best book of the creepiest monsters to come out in a long time: Monsters of the Endless Dark! I was quite impressed with this book, and the second the DMs see the pictures alone, they will squeal with glee at the the thought of unleashing these nightmares on their players! Keep an eye out for it.
Oh yes, someone close to my hometown, the legendary Tom Jolly! Creator of Wiz War and Drakon. He's a good friend of my brother, too. When I asked him what he was doing at the con, he said he was looking to sell some new game ideas! Coolness.
Well there was much tiredness in the feet by the time I got to the evening's dinner which was themed like a birthday for AEG's 10th anniversary (shoutout to Andrew Snow). They announced quite a lot of new stuff to come out that's very exciting. How about a Stargate SG-1 game to go with Spycraft? Isn't that the coolest?! You now have an excellent way to transport your characters from one campaign setting to another! They also have a new card game aimed at younger kids called HumAliens, so if you think Yu-gi-oh is evil incarnate, there just might be an alternate to steer your little brother or sister too. Also snagged up as a gaming license is purportedly Japan's hottest anime property aimed at teen boys: Initial D. All about car racing, the cartoon is nothing like Speed Racer. It blends 2D animation of the characters with 3D renderings of the cars and racing. And also, they announced a Warlord RPG. Yup. An RPG based on the card game. Coolness indeed.
After the party, we all walked out with a box of Legend of the Five Rings decks, a box of Warlords: Black Knives boosters, a Farscape RPG book, the book Lords of the Peaks: The Essential Guide to Giants, and the When Darkness Comes game. Happy Birthday indeed.
I felt a little too tired to get into any demos and elected to go home and rest. That's when I see the headlines come up. All of a sudden it's a bit hard to get excited about all our fantasy battles when the real thing is going on right now. It's almost good timing that tomorrow is the last day. Well, I'm gonna watch a few more bulletins and then sleep. Good night wherever you are.

March 19, 2003 - 4:45AM - GAMA: Tuesday
Wow! The first day with full booth exhibitions. It was quite daunting to say the least. And there's still more to go. Anyway, here is the summary and shoutouts:
To Kristen and Andrew Looney at Looney Games. They publish games like Flux and Chrononauts. Met up with Tony DiGerolamo. As well as being part of Wingnut Games he also created the RPG comic The Travellers. Very cool, guy. Got some very funny games in his camp like Og, Stuper Powers Deluxe, and Battle Cattle!
Frank Bustamante of Third World Games took
led me through a demo of two of their card games, Battle of the Bands, and The Testimony of Jacob Hollow, a quite gruesome yet easily played card game. Pretty fun to play.
I got to meet Jeff Bellinger, creator of the Killer Bunnies card game. He was very cool to talk to. Sadly, he had already run the demo on Monday and would be heading back tonight. I got the gist of the game, and I'll probably have to get some people interested in running a game sometime.
Although I didn't get to test the new Spongebob Squarepants card game at Upper Deck Entertainment, I did get to run through a few hands of Yu-Gi-Oh! with Brad Lapin of All Ways Gaming. Many kids play the game at the store (very rapidly, I might add) so it was nice to have a slow game with someone who could answer my questions.
Of course, in talking to the exhibitors and bagging free swag, I also pimp and plug the site to no end. Not at Fast Forward Games! I already had fans there in the form of Jamie and Renae Chambers.
Oh yes, I ran into John Kovalic of Dork Tower. It was fun to see him again. He's got quite a lot with all the things he's illustrating besides Dork Tower (Munchkin, Munchkin D20, Apples to Apples) The evening dinner held by Wizkids was very cool, since they handed out figures for their new Shadowrun Action Figure Game! Not only that, after dinner the battle lines were drawn at each table and skirmishes between rival Shadowrunners were fought. My team won at our table, and my share of the booty was a Limited Edition Johnny Storm figure from Heroclix. After that the good people at KenzerCo roped me in for a demo of their new minis game Final Days. Remeber the scene in Army of Darkness where the good battled the maurading zombie army attempting to overrun the castle? It felt like that's what I was playing. The good guys may have big guns and loyal dogs, but the evil guys have a whole zombie army to unleash on you. I quickly got into the rules, which uses playing cards rather than dice to determine initiative and to-hits. Very cool. Won that game too. :)
Finally, a nod to Mel Nash of Well Red Press. Looks like a cool up and comer site covering comics and games. Check it out. Me, I have to sleep now. Even more to cover tomorrow.

March 17, 2003 - 11:00PM - GAMA: Monday
That's right, boys and girls! It's GAMA time in Vegas! Can you say "gaming convention swag"? Sure I knew you could. "Swag" is a special kind of free loot, isn't it, boys and girls?
Anyways, I got the Orleans (the off-strip casino where the convention is taking place) and registered. The booths were still being set up today so it was mostly seminars and makeshift demos.
Wizkids had their big feedback meeting, but I couldn't get into that. The line extended to the length of the convention floor. John got in, of course, and got the huge Mechwarrior Dropship figure they were handing out, which now resides in the shop window.
A couple of demos I played that were of note:
Daniel Vujovic of Dust Bunny Games ran a demo of their soon to be published card game Seasons. The game plays similar to rummy, but the four decks used are each based on one of the four seasons, complete with it's own special 'power'. You make runs by linking days together. There are also special holiday cards that can add to your score as well. About the most complicated thing about the game is the scoring system, but once you get past that, the game is quite enjoyable. I had fun with it, and hope it gets published soon.
On the other end, we have Ken Burnside of Ad Astra Games drumming up interest in his space combat game Attack Vector: Tactical. I admit I found the game a bit daunting, but I didn't have much time to absorb the rules. Ken did come up with a unique way to get people into playing the demo. His map was set up with small chocolates as various targets which you won if you successfully 'damaged' it with your ship. Ken does scientific consultation with sci-fi publisher Baen Books and obviously enjoys the mathematical side of things (The shirt he wore said this and the other side of the shirt has all the math to back it up!) On the other hand, he has done great work in making the game playable without an advanced mathematics degree. His motto is "We do all the horrifying math so you don't have to!" It's already been compared to Full Thrust and Babylon 5 Wars and is getting a growing following so this is another one to keep an eye out for.
Well, that's it for today. And now to sleep! There's more to come!

March 14, 2003 - 9:20PM - Recovery
Well, the system is back up, but it took some doing. I had to buy a new hard drive and reinstall all my software, and I'm still not totally caught up. Oh, and a big thanks to the fan that donated to the new drive. It didn't cover all costs, but every donation helps.
In RPG doings, I just finished Final Fantasy. Yup, the first one. And not that Playstation remake either, but the good ol' NES version. Complete with the combat system that works like this: if two characters are targeting the same enemy and the first one kills it, the other character will just wave his weapon around (Good night, everybody!) at empty space. Oh that was so aggrivating! But I managed to make my way through. I plan on playing more FF's. I guess it's because I heard Final Fantasy 9 has a whole bunch of references to all the previous FF's and I want to have an equal opportunity to catch them all before I play it. I started FF8 on the Playstation in the living room, but I keep hearing from everyone about how much it sucks. I'll admit that the combat system feels like they threw too many bells and whistles into it, and the graphics would have looked a lot better if they had waited to put it out on PS2, but I don't feel set to give up on it.
Speaking of console RPGs, is Chrono Trigger, like, the RPG that has no end? I swear, I've been playing that thing off and on for a while now, and I don't feel any closer to the end than I did when I started it months ago. And I've lost the sense of story I had on it too. All the little players and bosses and everything don't impress upon me as they should. All I know is at the end of it, the big bad is Lavos. I hate when I lose sense of the story like that.
In non-console RPGs, I just got my copy of Red Dwarf: The RPG. JOY! I am definitely running a game of this! They definitely have the flavor of the show built into the book, and I'm curious to see what kind of team my friends can come up with.
Finally, GAMA is coming to town! And you know what that means! That's right! RPG CONVENTION SWAG! I'm going to so be there this next week! Well enough ranting!
March 2, 2003 - 3:00PM - The System.. is DEAD!
I realize the site is having problems and I'm looking into that now. But also, my main computer decided to die on me. Even when I did a full reformat and repartition, and then I go to install WinXP again, I still get a blue screen of death. I'm thinking my hard drive is corrupted.
January 24, 2003 - 3:00PM - Eight Ain't Enough

But Cartoon Eight IS completed! Go see it now!
You can also go here to the forum and comment and vote on it!

January 23, 2003 - 2:45AM - A Gr-8 Announcement
Greetings, Knights. Well, I HAD started a job at a company that does banners for all the conventions in town. However, now it seems that I'm no longer needed there. And I didn't find out about this from them. Nope. I got an e-mail from my job agent! They merely said "I wasn't a good fit" for the company.
But, this is good news. Because now the proverbial fire has been lit under my butt to get the next cartoon finished. And I can safely announce that the next cartoon WILL BE DONE before the end of the week. I will be posting it sometime between Friday and Monday. I am about 95% finished and the lip-sync is progressing very rapidly. Gonna sleep now, but gonna work on it some more when I wake up. Take care.
